Fissures sealants
Fissures sealants are a preventive, non-invasive and recommended treatment for dental cavities. Fissures are often narrow and deep in the back teeth, where bacteria can accumulate despite regular brushing. If bacteria can't be removed, they have free rein to cause tooth decay. To remedy this situation, we need to modify the shape of the natural tooth by adding a light-curing varnish. It will smooth the occlusal surface, making daily brushing much easier and protecting areas at risk of decay.
Recommendation
Fissures sealants should be applied as soon as the first permanent molars have fully erupted, usually around age 6.
Before treatment
It's a good idea to have a dental check-up with a dentist in the year before treatment, to make sure there are no cavities. You should also have your teeth cleaning by a dental hygienist 2 months before treatment, to ensure that there are no excess bacteria in your mouth.
What does the treatment involve?
The treatment is performed without breaking the tooth with dental drill and without anesthesia. Simply clean the tooth thoroughly with an abrasive paste, isolate it with absorbent cotton, apply the varnish and light-cure it. At the end, we check that contact has been made between the upper and lower teeth, and adjust if necessary. The varnish will physically protect the hollow of the tooth, but will also continuously release fluoride to strengthen the tooth enamel. In theory, this treatment lasts 7 years.
